[Cable Network News] Germany's ABL has secured a contract to provide Marine Warranty Survey (MWS) services for the offshore transportation and installation operations of the Modular Offshore Grid 2 (MOG2) Energy Island project in the North Sea of Belgium. The contract was awarded by the Belgian electricity service company Elia Group.

The MOG2 project aims to develop offshore grid infrastructure, connecting 3.5GW of new wind farms within the Princess Elisabeth zone to the Belgian national grid through an energy hub located on an artificial island. By creating a new hybrid interconnection point, the island will help optimize the cost of renewable energy production in the North Sea.

ABL's scope of work includes reviewing all procedural documents, inspecting vessels to assess whether the proposed fleet is suitable for Transport and installation (T&I) operations, and on-site attendance to ensure compliance with approved procedures. It will cover the transportation and installation of the energy island (concrete caisson foundations and port), HVAC and HVDC modules, and export cables.

Belgium is one of the four EU countries that recently announced the goal of increasing their combined offshore wind power capacity to 120 gigawatts by 2030 and to 300 gigawatts by 2050. Once the Princess Elisabeth wind farm zone is completed, Belgium's offshore wind power capacity is expected to increase from the current 2.26 gigawatts to 5.8 gigawatts by 2030.

The ABL Group's team in France will be responsible for managing the project, supported by relevant experts from the ABL Group. The contract amount has not been disclosed. The project is expected to last until 2030.

ABL, a subsidiary of the Oslo-listed company ABL Group ASA, is an independent energy and maritime consultancy firm specializing in solutions that reduce risk and drive energy transition in the fields of renewable energy, maritime, oil, and gas. ABL has a diversified portfolio in energy transition engineering and consulting, including participation in over 40 hydrogen projects and extensive experience in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

ABL's operations in France also benefit from the expertise of its sister company Innosea, a marine renewable energy consultancy based in Nantes.
