Latvian transmission system operator Augstsprieguma Tikls (AST) and Estonian transmission system operator Elering have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to start joint development of the fourth electricity interconnection. The new link will increase the transmission capacity between Estonia and Latvia and contribute to the development of renewables in the Baltic Sea region.

The planned fourth Estonia-Latvia interconnector is intended as a hybrid link, which in addition to connecting the two countries' power systems will also link offshore and onshore renewable energy generation capacities, thus contributing to the achievement of the countries' climate targets. The exact location and other technical details of the link will be agreed in the later stages. According to the initial assessment and technical analyses, the interconnection capacity is estimated to be 1000 MW, and the interconnector, along with accompanying grid infrastructure investments, is planned to be completed by 2035.
