Recently, China Mobile, in collaboration with its partners, has completed the world's first full-rate fusion 50G PON (Passive Optical Network) technology verification for 10 gigabit access. This successful verification signifies that the 50G PON technology has preliminarily addressed the "last mile" challenge in commercial networks, laying the foundation for the industrialization of 50G PON technology. With the accelerated proliferation of gigabit optical networks and driven by market demand and industrial development, the era of 10 gigabit access is emerging. 50G PON is a key foundational technology for next-generation 10-gigabit access, and with the completion of the ITU-T international standards, advancing the maturity of technology and industry is imperative. To meet the network evolution and development needs of China Mobile, the 50G PON system should support full-rate fusion of "three generations and five modes" on the same port.

This technical verification, aimed at commercial deployment requirements, focused on the core capabilities of full-rate fusion 50G PON technology for 10-gigabit access and achieved a series of landmark results:

Coexistence Capability of Three Generations and Five Modes: By adopting a new type of combiner/splitter device structure, the simultaneous coexistence of 50G PON on the same port for three generations and five different types of ONU standards was realized for the first time, laying the groundwork for the smooth evolution of existing networks.

Full-Rate Upstream Compatibility for 50G PON: A dynamic adaptive balance oDSP scheme was proposed to differentiate EQ balance based on ONU upstream rates and varying distances, verifying for the first time the on-demand deployment compatibility of symmetric and asymmetric 50G PON ONUs on the same port.

10-Gigabit Base Capability: Breakthrough achievement of full-rate forwarding across eight ports, with latency characteristics, improved to the millisecond level and further enhancement of system reliability, providing a network foundation for new services in the 10-gigabit era.

The success of this full-rate fusion 50G PON technology verification has prepared the technical reserves for subsequent commercial trials on the network. Bai Lirong, Deputy Manager of the Transmission Network Department at China Mobile Group's Planning and Construction Division, stated that the commercial deployment of 50G PON must fully consider forward and backward compatibility, and full-rate fusion of three generations is the key foundation for smooth evolution. Li Junwei, Technical Manager at the Basic Network Technology Research Institute of China Mobile Research Institute, indicated that the core key technologies proposed, such as dynamic adaptive balance oDSP, have all been verified in this round. Subsequent efforts will further clarify the performance index requirements for symmetric C+ systems, accelerating the maturity of the 50G PON full-rate fusion technology industry.

Facing the era of 10-gigabit access, China Mobile will continue to work hand in hand with industry chain partners, persistently delve into technological innovation and exploration, and steadily advance the construction of the 10-gigabit broadband ecosystem. This will promote the collaborative development of the new generation of optical access networks based on 50G PON+FTTR intelligent collaboration, oriented towards new architectures, new businesses, and new experiences, providing a higher quality ubiquitous optical access foundation for the digitalization of homes and enterprises.
