On June 6th, the world's tallest dam-body pumped storage power station-State Grid Xinyuan Jiangsu Jurong Pumped Storage Power Station and its accompanying 500 KV power grid project were completed and put into operation, with the upper reservoir beginning to store water simultaneously.

The dam of the station's upper reservoir stands at 182.3 meters, making it the tallest dam body for a pumped storage power station in the world. The station utilizes the height difference between the upper and lower reservoirs to pump water from the lower to the upper reservoir during off-peak electricity hours, storing potential energy. During peak electricity hours, this potential energy is converted into electrical energy and fed into the power grid, earning the station the moniker "power bank" for the grid.

The power grid project that has commenced operation is the 500 kV line transmission project for the Jurong Pumped Storage Power Station, which includes the construction of 21 kilometers of new transmission lines and 53 towers. The station is connected to the national grid through this line. "We innovated by using visual tensioning equipment and digital steel wire rope recovery devices among other intelligent construction equipment, completing the construction task while protecting the mountain's greenery," explained Xu Huaiyu, Deputy Chief Engineer of Jiangsu Transmission and Transformation Co., Ltd.

The Jurong Pumped Storage Power Station began construction in March 2017, with the installation of six new 225,000 kW reversible water turbine generator units, totaling an installed capacity of 1.35 million kW and an investment exceeding 9.6 billion yuan. "By the end of 2025, when all the units of the station are put into operation, the annual pumped storage will reach 18 billion kWh, and the annual electricity generation will be 13.5 billion kWh. The electricity generated will be able to meet the annual electricity needs of approximately 360,000 households," introduced Bao Lei, Director of the 500 kV Substation Operation and Inspection Center of State Grid Zhenjiang Power Supply Company.

It is understood that the first unit of the Jurong Pumped Storage Power Station will be connected to the national grid in August this year, which will further contribute to the power supply guarantee and the green and low-carbon energy transformation in the Yangtze River Delta region.
