Recently, Accelink Technologies, in collaboration with Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Westlake University, State Grid Information & Telecommunication Company, and Corning Optical Communications, announced a groundbreaking achievement in single-span optical communication transmission. They successfully achieved a transmission distance of 1002.75 kilometers without any relay, setting a new world record in this field and marking the first-ever realization of a thousand-kilometer single-span transmission globally.
This milestone follows Accelink Technologies' previous industry-leading achievements of 2.5G and 10G single-span transmissions over distances of 713 km and 665 km, respectively. It represents another significant leap, breakthrough, and record in single-span transmission technology.
In communication networks, relay stations act as "workstations" for signal transmission. Traditionally, a relay station is required approximately every 100 kilometers. In ultra-long-distance communication transmission, the need for numerous relay stations significantly increases costs. In this context, non-relay optical communication systems become a more optimal choice. They simplify transmission lines by enabling direct information transmission between the sending and receiving ends, thereby reducing overall system costs. These systems are widely used in dedicated communication networks for power grids, railways, highways, and oil and gas pipelines, especially in traversing vast uninhabited areas such as deserts, oceans, forests, and swamps.
This experiment utilized the best electronic and optical systems, incorporating new spread spectrum modulation coding, ultra-low loss large effective area fibers, coherent receivers, high-performance Raman pumps, and remote pump amplification technology to build an ultra-long-span non-relay optical fiber transmission system. It achieved world-class records with transmission distances of 1002.75 km at a rate of 2 Mb/s and 808.27 km at a rate of 2.5 Gb/s.
At the 29th International Conference on Optical Fiber Communication (2024 OECC), this achievement was published as a post-deadline paper (PDP), which represents the highest academic quality. PDP papers aim to present the latest technological advancements and record-breaking achievements in the field of optical communication, representing the current highest technical level in the industry. Only six papers worldwide were selected as PDP papers at this conference.
